Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, recently published a sweeping essay called The Adolescence of Technology. It's one of the most honest, clear-eyed pieces of writing I've read from someone actually building the systems that will shape the next decade of human civilization. Here's why it matters, and what it has us thinking about at HT Blue.
A Country of Geniuses in a Datacenter
Amodei's central metaphor is arresting. He asks you to imagine that a literal country of 50 million geniuses materializes somewhere in the world, each one smarter than any Nobel Prize winner, operating at ten times human speed. Then he asks: what would a competent national security advisor say about it?
The answer, obviously, is that this would be the most serious event in modern history. And Amodei's point is that we are likely only one to two years away from something functionally equivalent. Not science fiction. Not speculation. An extrapolation from a decade of scaling laws that have held remarkably steady.
What makes this framing so useful is that it forces us out of abstract debates about whether AI is "good" or "bad" and into practical questions about architecture, governance, and intent. As someone who designs systems connecting people, data, and intelligent processes, I find that grounding invaluable. The question is never whether these systems will arrive. The question is how we build them, how we steer them, and what kind of relationship humans maintain with them once they're here.
Grown, Not Built
One passage that stopped me was Amodei's description of how AI models are "grown rather than built." This is not a casual metaphor.
